Picture 002Kachchhi, the language of a small minority in western India, is seeing a steady revival, thanks to a group of dedicated people, who are playing a proactive role to ensure its survival, as also its expansion.

The Kachchhi Sahitya Kala Sangh, a local institution, has been working consistently towards imparting the basics of the language to people who are not acquainted with it.

The Sangh was established in 1999 and has trained more than 9,000 people since then, said Narayan Joshi ‘Karayal,’ its founder.

Joshi, also a noted short story writer, said: “The next examination will be held in the last week of December. It will be the ninth batch of students learning Kachchhi.”

The certificate course offered by the Sangh is popular among non-Kachchhi speaking people, especially students, policemen and government employees, who are transferred to Kutch from other parts of the state.

Joshi has also written a grammar book, the ‘Kachchhi Pathavali,’ in two parts, for teaching the language. The Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) has also approved it as the official textbook for teaching Kachchhi to teachers from places other than Rapar and Bhachau.

Joshi said from this year onwards, the Gujarat Kachchhi Sahitya Academy has started giving financial assistance to the Sangh for conducting certificate course exams. “We had requested the Academy to take over the job of conducting exams and awarding certificates. In response, they offered financial help to run the programme,” he said.
